I know they had favorite foods and other threads here and this thread idea may have been done a zillion and one times already, so excuse me if someone already posted something like this before me. What are your favorite musical singers, bands or artists?

I can't really say I have a definitive list or anything, but here's some I really like, just off the top of my head.

Ministry, Motley Crue (older stuff anyway), David Allan Coe, The Doors, Danzig (/Misfits/Samhain), Dr. Octagon, John Lee Hooker, Prince, Eminem (/D12/Bizarre), Stuck Mojo, Guns N Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers, David Bowie, Marilyn Manson, Kid Rock, Queen, Peaches, Hank 3, White Zombie, Johnny Cash, NWA (Dr. Dre), Bauhaus, ZZ Top, Barry White

Well, apart from classic music, mostly black metal starting from english legends Venom, over Swiss band Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, they were first who brought occult themes in music and then later when Bathory showed up in Sweden that was a goal of building a Black Metal.

Actually my taste is mostly in Scandinavian Black Metal bands, cause Black Metal have totaly unique and dark atmosphere and it's not for everyone.

Mayhem, Darkthrone, Burzum, Immortal, Emperor, Satyricon, Dark Funeral, Ajattara, Borknagar, Arcturus, Zyklon-B, Thou Shaul Suffer, Ihsahn, Mörk Gryning, Vondur, The Legion, Nårdrstorm.....etc, the list is long.

The Carpenters (especially their song Happy) are so much heavier than all that ideotic rubbish put together that Dagni just named.

I love Joni Mitchell, especially Hejira and Clouds. Of course the first four Black Sabbath albums. I've adored the Cure and Depeche Mode since like 9th grade. Billy Gould(Faith No More), Flea and Steve Digorgio(Death, Vintersorg, Autopsy, Testament, ect)Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth) are among my favorite bassists.
One of the most versatile musicians I can think of is Abbath from Immortal.
He laid down the bass, vocal, and Drum Tracks, and the album was fucking excellent. One of the best examples of the style(black metal)
Drummers- god, so many. Sean Reinert of Cynic and Death (the Human album, sell blood and get it). Dave Lombardo from Slayer and Fantomas is unreal. 'Wasted' James Meza from Tiger Army and Nekromantix, Pete Sandoval from Morbid Angel (awesome guy, met him while he was kickin around a soccer ball in an alley behind the venue ), Proscriptor McGovern from Absu is downright phenomenal. His drumming has multiple textures and nuances, he does all the lead vocals and doesn't abuse the shit out of his snare like so many metal drummers. Nicko McBrain and Clive Burr (both of Iron Maiden) are certainly tasteful and driving.
Brian Eno's work, as well as Peter Gabriel era Genesis are fucking brilliant.
King Crimson is intense. Got Fripp?
Ozzy For president.
Rap- not so into. Dre, Snoop, Ice Cube (older work of all).
Classical, love Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, Holst, Vivaldi and others. The Planets is a fucking awesome composition.
I'm all over the place. Lately I'm on a Madonna kick :tong:
As far as guitarists, I'm a big fan of Jade Puget (AFI), Peter Tatgren (Hypocrisy)Jim Heath aka The Reverend Horton Heat, Bill Taylor and Bob Vigna from New York Death Metal stalwarts Immolation. Gene From Angel Corpse, Chuck Schuldiner from Death (RIP), Mauser and Peter from Polish speed junkies Vader, The Cavanaugh brothers from Anathema and of course, Eddie Van Halen.
Singer /songwriters: Jeff Buckley, Leigh Nash, Lori Carson, Nick Drake, Laurie Anderson (kinda more abstract) Leonard Cohen, Rufus Wainwright, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, the list goes on.
People who's lyrics really get under my skin- Thom Yorke (Radiohead), Emily Whitehurst (Tsunami Bomb), Nick from Tiger Army, Davey from AFI, Bjork, Robert Smith (The Cure), Keith Morris (Black Flag, Circle Jerks), Edward Ka-Spel (The Legendary Pink Dots, The Tear Garden).
Favorite Black Metal: Impaled Nazarene, Immortal, Emperor, Burzum, Krieg, Averse Sefira, Angel Corpse, Revenge, Mayhem, Darkthrone (esp. Under a Funeral Moon) Behemoth, Satyricon, Nargaroth, Abruptum and a few others.
CELTIC FUCKIN FROST!!!!! This band and Bathory were massively influential on both Death and Black Metal. Blood, Fire, Death anyone?
Favorite electronic/EBM, Industrial: Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly, Front 242, Assemblage 23, Apoptygma Berzerk, Ministry, KMFDM, Combichrist and many others.
My head hurts now from all that thinking :P
One more thing. Jaco Pastorius is a fucking DEITY.

Okies, too many to name. I listen primarily to Flamenco these days, but I won't bore you by listing a whole bunch of meaningless Spanish names. Should you wish delve a little deeper, just Google/Wiki: "Paco De Lucia" and take it from there. Otherwise, I fill the gaps in with Rock, Metal, Heavy Metal, Thrash, Shred, Classical, Opera, and even a little Pop. I used to listen to a bit of hip-hop, but the prevalent homophobic attitudes and mindless violence therein have lessened its appeal as I've matured. But I'd agree with Azrael that some of the early work of the afore-mentioned artists is noteworthy. I like to think I've struck a nice and diverse balance when it comes to euphonious music.

for me, it's become genres, not artisits... new age, world, and jazz mostly.. a bit of electronica and "ambient" tossed in.. sorry, but as i'm losing my hearing, i find that todays lyrics and singers just suck.. so i adapted to the music types that are mostly instrumentals and arrent full of fuzzy tinny voices.. ever really listen to artists like al dimeola? his guitar work rivals santana's and they both can paint fantastic pictures with their works. ..just drop the plastic into the player, ease on the 'phones, and let them blow thru your mind...and see a whole 'nother world..which is exactly what a talented musician should be able to do.

Like Wanderingrichard, we are into genre's more than artists, but there are artists that we do like.

My list of favorite types of music and artists is fairly extensive and broad--I like music that ranges from Blues to Bluegrass, Cajun to Celtic, and beyond.

At the moment--my favorite type of music basically falls into the category of "American Roots/Traditional/Singer-Songwriter"

I could post a reply bigger than Azrael's on this topic. Instead, I will just have a link to my radio show. I host a weekly radio show called Across The Board http://www.kfai.org/node/3628 .

You can look over the setlists to see the kind of music I'm into. You can also listen to the shows anytime for 3 weeks after broadcast. I go by the on air name of DJ SLT.
