Of the 528 confirmed cases reviewed, 95% are believed to have transmitted during sex between men, according to a new paper in the New England Journal of Medicine.
The outbreak, which epidemiologists believe initially began in mid-spring gatherings of gay and bisexual men in Europe, has since alarmed such experts by ballooning to nearly 16,000 cases worldwide.
All the cases were among men, including one transgender man, 98% of whom identified as gay or bisexual. This stark demographic finding is in keeping with data on the outbreak from around the world, such as a recent report from the British Health Security Agency finding that of the 699 monkeypox cases for which there was available information, 97% were in gay, bisexual or other men who have sex with men. New York City, the U.S. epicenter, has seen only one woman diagnosed with the virus out of 639 cases confirmed through July 19.

I've been watching this and have decided to lay low...not down low...until something changes. It reminds me how, shortly after my cocksucking beginnings, the news that AIDS was a 'gay disease' started spreading. Soon, I went cold turkey to give up my new found lust for many years.

If it becomes more wide spread, my male partner and I will need to avoid sexual contact with other males.

Anyone fifty or older probably received a smallpox vaccine during childhood. The CDC estimates the efficacy of the smallpox vaccine is at least 85% against monkeypox.

i believe the research to be true. It comes along with other sexual transmitted health issues. One needs to be aware of these findings use the best pre-caution methods available but at the end one will have to deal with our consequences if we don't follow. Protected yourself is one thing but need to protect your partner also.

I am old enough to remember the beginnings of the AIDS terror. Being a young high-school kid, I didn't think much of it truthfully, I mean, they called it the Gay Cancer, so I had no concerns other than trying not to get a girl pregnant.
Years and years later looking back, we held back information so as not too, looking for the word here, stigmatize one segment of the population when we could have closed the bath houses, and the mayors in NYC and San Francisco said no.
I would rather face some stigma now and have all those people, including two close friends, still alive. If this thing is hitting men who have same sex relationships, lets have it in the open

The Canadian reality seems to be a mix of same sex transmission and anyone can transmit the virus through skin to skin contact. I believe that two young children have become infected. It seems highly contagious and is spreading quickly. The Canadian media initially reported same sex relations but recently mention that it is not exclusively same sex transmission. Toronto has the most transmissions in Canada. Church Street is not mentioned(gay village).

Church Street is not mentioned(gay village).I am not concerned personally unduly for my own health because of how and with whom I have sex, but I may have to be as it spreads more deeply into the general community. At present something between 3 and 6% are cases are fatal which doesn't sound a lot but the percentage may be small, but the numbers great. Look at Covid.
In so many ways the fact that it is generally accepted as principally a male same sex activity malady is worrying and already that is causing a further reaction to male same sex activity even greater than we currently see certainly in the UK and my little part of it, and also in France where I am currently on holiday. I was given the smallpox vaccine as a small child but vaccines are fallible more so if they were not designed to combat a particular disease or strain of it.
This development and perception of the monkey pox epidemic can only add to the pressure in many ways comments by Clarence Thomas made in the wake of the US Supreme Court ruling over Abortion in the US about other areas of human rights they may wish to interfere with. The LGBTQ+ had best get its act together before the reaction to progress in the liberation of gay, bi and others gets out of hand.

Being a long term resident of the US, I take a rather more sanguine view of the state of LGBTQ rights... Most people with whom I discuss this (and I am firmly in the closet) are very much of the 'live an let live' school of thought, though thankfully I live in the Northeast, not the Taliban infested bible belt. Unfortunately a lot of what the world sees in the US are just the very loud, squeaky wheels of the self-righteous religious right and low rent carnival barkers like Sean Hannity and Faux Noise... not the every day American just trying to get by raise their kids.
I know this won't be a popular view but I think the bigger threat to the well being of the LGBTQ segment of the population is largely self inflicted... Americans are generally happy for other people to live their lives how they wish as long as those same people get out of their lives and stop trying to force their ideology on them.
With regards to Monkey Pox specifically, one guy said to me something along the lines of... I never wear a crash helmet on my bike so I can't tell them not to have unprotected sex.
As I said... Live and let live...

As I said... Live and let live...I agree with the last few words in ur post.. Sadly, I don't see ne sign that the US Supreme Court majority agrees with u.. Which also tends to disprove most of ur opening paragraph.
I have never and won't ever go along with the attitude that threats to our well being are largely self inflicted any more than African American fight against oppression is responsible for wounds, bigotry and the continued oppression imposed upon African Americans. I refuse to accept my and the LGBTQ fight against those who have oppressed our kind is a greater threat to my and their well being than the bigotry and intolerance of those who hate us and continue to do all they can to take from us our rights to be who and what we are.
This site used to have many debates on issues central to our well being and it was the better for it.. now it's just what Reef says... which is fine as far as it goes... but the site can be so much more. carry on being sanguine... The LGBTQ didnt get us where we are by being sanguine, neither will it hold on to the rights we have by being sanguine!

I find this connection to be... interesting since I can't imagine this virus being so... selectively specific and targeting sex between men. Yeah, I can see how this can, will, and probably is impacting things LGBTQ+ and I've not seen any response to this information but here's the thing I feel is the most important: Where did this come from? What's going on in the world where this previously unknown virus is now running wild and on top of COVID still hanging around? It is just... coincidence that there are reported cases involving M2M sex as a contributing factor? See, I remember when HIV arrived and how it was specifically said that IV drug users who were also male and homosexual were the prime vector of the disease and it was 100% sexually transmitted... until a very heterosexual married couple caught the virus and because of a blood transfusion... which makes me wonder if this is along the same lines and, again, it can't be a "gay disease" because viruses don't work like that; they infect anyone that is susceptible to infection.

Thank you for posting this article. It is a positive addition to this site and to the Bisexual community as a whole.

Outbreaks like that within the gay and bisexual community are primarily a result of hookup culture. That?s why the blame is always placed on us. The virus doesn?t discriminate but high-risk behavior increases the chances of infection.
